หากสังเกตรูปปั้นตามบันไดวัดในภาคเหนือ หลายคนอาจมองว่าเป็นพญานาค แต่แท้จริงแล้วคือ “มกร” (มะ-กะ-ระ หรือ มะกอน) ประติมากรรมที่ได้รับอิทธิพลจากศิลปะอินเดียและถ่ายทอดสู่ล้านนา มกร เป็นสัตว์ในเทพนิยาย ผสมระหว่างสัตว์บกและสัตว์น้ำ สื่อถึงความสำเร็จและความอุดมสมบูรณ์ ในศิลปะล้านนา “มกรคายนาค” เป็นภาพมกรสำรอกพญานาคออกมา ซึ่งบางแนวคิดเชื่อว่า มกรแทนความยึดติด ส่วนพญานาคเป็นจิตที่หลุดพ้น ลองสังเกต มกรคายนาค ตามราวบันไดวัดล้านนา ซึ่งสะท้อนรากเหง้าทางศิลปะและอัตลักษณ์ของดินแดนนี้

If you observe the sculptures along the staircases of Northern Thai temples, you may assume they depict Nāga, but they are actually “Makara”—a mythical creature influenced by Indian art and integrated into Lanna culture. Makara, a fusion of land and water creatures, symbolizes success and abundance. In Lanna art, “Makara disgorging Nāga” is a common motif, representing Makara as attachment and Nāga as the liberated spirit. Look for these sculptures in Lanna temples, as they reflect the region’s deep-rooted artistic and cultural identity.
